Program Notes

For me, Euphoniums and Tubas are very powerful, yet beautiful instruments. Not just because I am a Euphonium myself, but many times I find that Euphoniums and Tubas in orchestral or band repertoire or even as solo instruments to have quite great versatility as being so delicate in moments of suspense or peace, or being big, loud and heavy in moments of great weight and power. And if there's one thing better than Euphoniums or Tubas solo or in section, it's as an ensemble! Where they really get to show off!

Concertino for Tuba Ensemble is a work dedicated to the UTSA Tuba and Euphonium Studio, aka the Boom Squad. This work acts as a way for the ensemble to show off their technical and musical skills. It begins with the lethargic and sorrowful Adagio doloroso e espressivo which builds and slows until the break to Allegro agitato, which is where the more technical aspect of the work comes in. This section builds until the climax, leading to the more expressive and slow Moderato doloroso, which is where the players get to show off the musical and expressive abilities. This develops and builds, leading to a recap of Allegro agitato, ending the work with a more lively and active Con energico e moto conclusion of the work.
