Piece for String Quartet - MIDI Recording
Program Notes
String quartets in general are quite lovely and interesting works of music that I personally enjoy. It's quite amazing what can be done with only 4 instruments. It was these reasons and listening to great works like the Bartók string quartets or Ravel's String Quartet in F major that inspired me to write this Piece for String Quartet and to try and work with this small but powerful ensemble.
Piece for String Quartet is a work for...well...string quartet comprised of 2 movements. The first movement Meditation : Andante is as the title suggests : a meditation which you can imagine a bit like when you're daydreaming and many thoughts go through you're head. For this meditation, it's a bit darker than one you could expect, almost sorrowful, which ends with a peaceful resolve at Tranquilo. This then transitions to a more lively and aggressive section Agitato which can be seen as the wild and angry thoughts that can take over in these daydreams. These thoughts begin with a frantic motive in the strings which continues and transforms throughout the movement, eventually ending with a heavy punctuation by the strings.
This is my first attempt at a work for an ensemble like this and in all, I'm quite satisfied with this being my first work for string quartet and I can only hope you will enjoy this work!
